Call for Participation
Women’s Shelters Canada is hosting its first national conference in June 2018 in Ottawa! This will be a unique opportunity for shelter and transition house (TH) workers to share and learn from their peers. It is also a chance for community partners, policy makers, researchers, activists, survivors, and others to engage with the shelter sector. The conference will offer practical opportunities for learning, knowledge sharing, and collaboration via workshops, panel presentations, and forum discussions.
The goal of this conference is to highlight the work of shelters and shelter workers in preventing and responding to violence against women (VAW), as well as to enable a fruitful ground for movement building. We also want to contribute to the development and enhancement of policy directly or indirectly linked to the issue of violence against women.
Proposals for presentations are welcomed from individuals, groups, coalitions, networks, teams – all submissions will be considered. We encourage you to share your ideas, promising practices, research findings, and stories at this national conference. Presentation formats include but are not limited to: panels, workshops, moderated debates, artistic expressions, self-directed skills shares, or something completely different.
Presentations should fall into one of the following thematic streams. To further assist you in developing your presentation idea, we have included some prompt questions relating to the conference streams. Your proposal may also fit within more than one stream. If there’s something you want to share that doesn’t seem to fit into these streams, you can put it into Emerging Issues.
Survivors’ contributions are encouraged in all of the streams.
Please note that presenters must still register and pay the registration fee. Presenters who are from an associate member of Women’s Shelters Canada may take advantage of reduced registration fees (max 2 per associate member).
